Apicoectomy
At Columbus Endodontic Specialists, our team is fully equipped to provide Apicoectomy procedures to treat existing endodontic issues and prevent future problems. Our goal is to save your natural teeth, restoring function and eliminating any pain or discomfort.
Why Do I Need An Apicoectomy?
While many patients’ infected teeth can be saved by a simple non-surgical root canal procedure, there are some cases where more complex treatment is necessary. An Apicoectomy is recommended when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure. This micro-surgical procedure allows us to locate small fractures or hidden root canals that might not appear on X-ray images but manifest as painful symptoms and sensitivity. It can also be used to remove calcium deposits in root canals or treat damaged root surfaces and the surrounding bone.
The Apicoectomy Procedure
During an Apicoectomy, your endodontist will first make you comfortable by applying local anesthesia. The gum tissue near the tooth is then opened to access the underlying bone and remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The very end of the root is also removed, and a small filling may need to be placed to seal the end of the root canal. Finally, a few stitches or sutures are placed to help the tissue heal. In the following months, the bone will heal around the end of the root.
If your endodontist prescribes this procedure, there’s no need to worry. Advanced technologies like digital imaging and operating microscopes allow Apicoectomies to be performed quickly, comfortably, and successfully, ensuring the best possible outcome for your oral health.
What to Expect After Your Apicoectomy
The Apicoectomy is typically performed in one appointment, and most patients return to their normal activities the next day. Post-surgical discomfort is generally mild, though it’s normal to experience some swelling and discomfort as your tooth and mouth heal. If you experience extreme pain beyond the normal amount, please contact our team so we can examine the area and provide the necessary care.
