Root Canal Therapy

At Columbus Endodontic Specialists, we are proud to offer many different endodontic services and types of treatment tailored to each unique case. In the field of endodontics, our team frequently performs root canal treatments, which are crucial for preserving your natural smile by treating infections within the tooth pulp and root. There are mainly two different types of root canal treatments—surgical root canals and non-surgical root canals. Most of the time, our practice deals with non-surgical root canals.

We are dedicated to providing painless, compassionate root canals to our patients in Columbus, ensuring the health of your teeth goes beyond what’s visible.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to treat inflammation or infection within the soft tissue of your tooth, which is where blood vessels and connective tissue are held. Although this procedure is very similar to a deep tooth filling, it involves more complex structures of the tooth. During a root canal, our endodontists at Columbus Endodontic Specialists use a handpiece and small brushes to access and remove the infected or inflamed tissues within the root. This process ultimately repairs and saves your natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction.

Who Should Get a Root Canal?

A root canal is the ideal treatment option for patients with deep tooth decay, injury, or damage leading to infection. It is important to recognize that in order for a root canal to properly work, your tooth must still be well enough to be preserved. If it is not, our team may recommend another solution, like a tooth extraction.

Root canals may be needed for a variety of issues, but some are more common than others. Dental health issues, such as deep tooth decay, inflammation or infection of pulpal tissue, cracks in teeth, and trauma often lead to needing a root canal.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is a relatively painless procedure that preserves your natural tooth. Our team administers a local anesthetic to numb the affected area, and for patients who struggle with dental anxiety, sedation dentistry is available. After removing the infected or inflamed tissue, the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and filled. A temporary restoration is then placed, and you will need to follow up with your dentist to have the tooth restored to full function with a final restoration, such as a crown or filling.

Typically, a root canal can be completed in only one or two visits and will likely require a follow-up visit with your dentist. A healing period will follow to ensure your tooth fully recovers. Our team will provide all necessary steps, instructions, and education you need to successfully heal.
